Home charging starts at the switchboard, not the garage wall

Charging your EV at home is more convenient than relying on public charging stations. Plug in when you get home, wake up to a full battery. The part that catches people out is that a 7kW charger is a serious load that runs for hours at a time, so it needs its own circuit back to the switchboard rather than a spare power point in the garage.

Before we install anything, we check your switchboard has the capacity to handle it and tell you upfront if it needs upgrading first. Once that’s sorted, we mount the charger where it suits the car, run the cable neatly, protect the circuit properly and hand you a Certificate of Electrical Safety. How the job runs

    Circuit run from the board to the charger location, in conduit or clipped neatly.

Compliance and sign-off

Wiring an EV charger to your switchboard is prescribed electrical work. It has to be done by a licensed electrician and it comes with a Certificate of Electrical Safety in your name. Keep it, because your insurer may ask for it, and most charger manufacturers won’t honour a warranty claim on a unit connected by someone unlicensed.

Why the switchboard is where the job starts

A 7kW charger draws a lot of current for a long time, which is a different kind of load from anything else in the house. It wants its own circuit from the board, with its own RCBO. Plenty of homes through Frankston, Seaford and Carrum Downs still have a board with no spare ways, or a ceramic-fuse board with no RCD protection at all, and some have consumer mains that were never sized for modern loads. We check all of that at the quote and tell you upfront, because a charger sitting in a box while you wait for a board upgrade is nobody’s idea of a good week.

Garage, carport or driveway

Where the charger goes is mostly about where the car parks and how far that is from the switchboard. A garage on the same wall as the board is the simplest job. A carport or exterior wall means an outdoor-rated charger and weatherproof connections, fitted to Australian standards so they last out there. A driveway a long way from the board is mostly a cable-run job, and we plan the route, through the roof, along a wall or underground, at quote stage. If we’re already running cable out to the carport, it’s a good moment to add the sensor light or the camera over the driveway in the same visit.

Charging from your own solar

If you have solar, or you’re planning it, the charger should be part of that conversation rather than an afterthought. We install the charger alongside the inverter and battery where they share a wall, and plan the circuit with the solar system rather than around it. Households going all-electric often do the EV charger and an induction cooktop at the same time, and since both want a dedicated circuit, it’s worth having the board looked at once for everything.

Already have a charger?

Plenty of chargers arrive with the car or get bought online, and we’re happy to install them provided they can be installed safely and comply with Australian standards. Send us the make and model when you book and we’ll check it against your switchboard before the day. If a charger that was installed elsewhere keeps tripping the board, it’s often exposing a circuit that was already marginal, or a fault the extra load has revealed, and that’s worth testing properly before anyone blames the charger.

Do I need a new circuit for an EV charger?
In most homes, yes. A 7kW home charger is a serious load, so it’s wired back to your switchboard on its own circuit rather than sharing one with the rest of the house. Before we install anything, we check your switchboard has the capacity to handle it and let you know upfront if it needs upgrading first.
Will my switchboard handle an EV charger?
Often, but not always. Older boards can lack the capacity and spare ways, and a ceramic-fuse board has no RCD protection at all. We check the board and the consumer mains at the quote and tell you upfront if an upgrade comes first. Where it does, we can usually do the board and the charger together.
Can I supply my own charger?
Yes, provided it can be installed safely and complies with Australian standards. Send us the make and model when you book so we can check it suits your switchboard and bring the right gear on the day.
Can I just charge from a power point in the garage?
The lead that comes with most cars will charge from an ordinary power point, but it’s slow and it’s using a circuit that was never designed for hours of continuous load. A 7kW wall charger on its own circuit is what gives you overnight charging, which is why that’s what we install.
Can I have a three-phase charger?
A 7kW single-phase charger is what most homes get and it suits overnight charging. If your property has three-phase supply, a faster three-phase charger may be an option. We check what you have at the quote and tell you honestly whether it’s worth it.
Can the charger work with my solar?
Yes. If you already have solar or a battery, or you’re planning it, tell us at the quote. We install the charger alongside the inverter and battery where they share a wall, plan the circuit with the solar system rather than around it, and can quote solar, battery and charger together.
How long does the install take?
A straightforward install with the switchboard close by is typically half a day, depending on the cable run from the board. If the board needs upgrading first, that’s usually a day, and we’ll tell you at the quote rather than on the day.
